Biography
- Reside with my wife and son in “forever weird” Austin, Texas. I grew up here and departed in 1983 to see the “rest of the world…” We moved back in 2005.
- More than 20-years of experience in general management, brand-building, marketing, sales, business development, venture investing and consulting… lived and worked extensively in Asia, Europe and all three U.S. coasts.
- Currently:
- EVP, GCI Digital Media — responsible for advising GCI clients on how they can exploit the Internet, social computing and emerging technologies to build their brands, develop markets and generate positive word-of-mouth.
- Companies I currently work with and advise include Dell, Nike, Whole Foods Market, Boehringer Ingelheim, Sony, Lowe’s, P&G, Capgemini and Remy.
- Formerly:
- CEO of Snap, an Austin-based company that helps companies and individuals sell excess inventories using on-line channels, such as eBay. Craigslist and Google. We sold all sorts of things, but excelled in high-end art and cars. One of my best moments was selling a $90k Porche race car to a CEO in Connecticut, sight unseen. As a result I won the opportunity to sell a $1 million painting but since I could only get $800,000 for it the owner would not sell (Don’t ask for the details on this one because that painting is still for sale).
- VP of GameChange, a Silicon Valley seed fund created by Accenture and Mobius Venture Capital, where I both invested in companies and worked with them on strategy, sales and marketing.
- Associate partner at Accenture Technology Ventures where I brought some good companies like Wild Tangent and Everypath to the portfolio.
- Associate partner at Accenture in global brand management, image development, market development and business development roles across a wide range of industries and service lines. I won’t bore you with my list of accomplishments at Accenture. Most relevant to “digital media” is the work I did to position Accenture in the early web and e-commerce markets and to sell some early projects. I’m also proud of a research project I lead in Asia called “e-commerce in Asia” in 1995 which was ahead of its time.
- Started my career at Y&R/Burson-Marsteller in NYC. My first project was to launch DEC’s Rainbow PC. My last project was to rename and reposition Arthur Andersen’s Management & Information Technology Group which turned out to be a very smart move indeed. Today Accenture is a leader in management and IT consulting and Arthur Andersen is “no more” as you probably know.
- Graduate of The University of Texas and one of those crazy Longhorn fans.
- Serve on board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Texas — you can’t go wrong by helping kids.
- Master swimmer with Longhorn Aquatics.
