New Second Life Data — Some Highlights & Happenings
The Official Linden Blog posted five new charts showing the growth of the community and economy of Second Life on Tues. I have been traveling and did not have a chance to take a closer look until this morning. Here are some highlights:
- Second Life world is made up of over 3,500 regions of land. A region is 65,536 square meters of land simulated by approximately 1 server CPU, making the combined world of Second Life nearly 4.5 times the size of Manhattan.
- 70% of Linden Lab’s revenue will come from land sales and maintenance fees.
- In November of 2006, residents spent more than 6.4 million hours in-word – that’s more than 10 times the number of user hours in January 2005.
- The monthly peak number of residents in Second Life at the same time has grown dramatically, reaching over 18,000 in the past couple of weeks.
- Women make up a little less than half of the total user hours each month.
- Half of the new Resident sign ups are from outside the US and the total hours used by non-US Residents continues to grow the fastest.
Other Second Life news to note:
- IBM is opening its island in the coming week. They have established a new consulting unit dedicated to helping their clients (e.g., Circuit City) exploit virtual worlds in productive ways. This is a big deal, in my view. Consulting firms don’t dedicate resources to initiatives because they’re “cool.” IBM must see some substantial opportunities here. I’m looking forward to seeing if they have “taken their own medicine” so to speak.
- NBC is hosting another event at their virtual Rock Center (the first was its virtual Christmas tree lighting). Next Wednesday, December 20, the network will feature the reggae band O.A.R. and gospel singer Robert Randolph. You’ll find them in the virtual Peacock Room at the top of Rockefeller Center at 6:25 pm SL time (9:25pm Eastern).
The Holiday Season is a great time to visit Second Life. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Since Dell announced a presence in Second Life, I’ve tried to pay more attention to how we can leverage SL for other clients. These stats are interestesting, specifically with that regard to the fact that women make up almost half of residents and that half are from outside the U.S. Another reason we need to view the digital landscape as a global opportunity.
