I’m Glad My Son Is Too Young To Drive

You’ll hear the phrase “ghostriding the whip” in the coming days.  It’s the latest viral video craze on YouTube.  It’s also the refrain in E-40’s song “Tell Me When to Go.”

“Ghostriding” is when the driver of a car exits the vehicle — while it is moving — and dances on its hood or roof or besides it.  This is freaking nuts, obviously, but apparently there are a lot of nuts out there.  Just watch a few of these videos on YouTube.
We’ve been talking about herd mentality and its role in viral videos and fast-breaking issues on the web.  This is a prime example of herd mentality:  A kid watches a ghostride on YouTube, thinks “I can do a lot better than that,” and then goes out and produces his/her own video.  When it happens over and over again I call that herd mentality.

What will break up the herd and end this trend?  That will be really tough to do, but watching this video might at least slow the herd down.
